Partial Hybrid Sub-Cell Model

Shay Shoam

MSc Student of Prof. Rami Haj-Ali

This research presents a meso mechanical model for multi-layered and thick section laminated composite structures, where it is possible to define a through-thickness repeating unit-cell: a sublaminate. The model attempts to evaluate in higher accuracy the out of plane stress value through the thickness and to generate a 3D equivalent homogenized material. The proposed model is based on a previous simplified 3D sublaminate model (Haj-Ali, 2001).  It expands the previous model whereby the out-of-plane stress was assumed to be constant and thus a C0 continuity was achieved.  The present model enforces this continuity but assumes a polynomial function of the 3rd order within each layer in the sublaminate. The model is founded on a 3D partially hybrid finite-element variational formulation. The remote average global strain field is enforced and applied through a linear displacement on the surface of the sublaminate. The model is examined in comparison with available exact elasticity solution of composite laminated structures.   .  It is found that the proposed stress functions does not yield a better local stress distribution compared with the original simplified sublaminate model.
