High Resolution Direct Position Determination in Multipath Conditions

The traditional localization methods are based on two step algorithms in which some parameters such as time of arrival or angle of arrival are being extracted first at each sensor. In the second step, these parameters are used to determine emitter's position based on geometry considerations. When facing multipath channels and multiple interfering sources, the first step parameters become much more difficult to obtain, especially in non-line of sight scenarios. In this work, we propose a direct position determination spectral-based algorithm for multiple emitter localization under multipath conditions. This approach does not require the estimation of preliminary parameters, but rather processes the observations from all sensors together in order to estimate the locations in one step. We achieve high resolution localization of emitters that transmit unknown signals through multipath channels using the minimum variance distortionless response method, which does not require knowledge of the number of sources. The advocated method either assumes the exact channel multipath delays are known, or makes use of the equivalent channel impulse response that can be derived from the source transmitted bandwidth and channel delay spread which are very practical to measure. The proposed method requires only a two dimensional search for planar geometry or three dimensional search for the general case.
