AND THE FORMATION OF ACTIVE TRANSFORMATION PRODUCTS:

Ozone is known for its efficient degradation of trace organic compounds; however, it also generates large number of potentially active transformation products. This work demonstrated ozone degradation of the popular anti-depressant drug venlafaxine in wastewater, and the formation of its main transformation product: N-oxide venlafaxine (an active compound).

In this study, carried out in the laboratory and in the field (pilot-scale), ozone degradation products of venlafaxine were first identified, kinetic parameters were measured for N-oxide venlafaxine (NOV), including its yield of formation (Ф~45%), its reaction rate with ozone (kNOV,O3 = 308 1/Ms) and OH• (kNOV,OH• = 5.3x109 1/Ms), and the wastewater’s oxidants exposure. The obtained kinetic data where subsequently used to generate a model to predict N-oxide concentration in wastewater containing venlafaxine during an ozone treatment.
