Nonlinear Interference in Fiber-Optic Communication systems: modeling, measurement, and mitigation

Abstract

The performance of modern fiber-optic communication systems is limited by nonlinear interactions which occur along the fiber. The Kerr effect causes a nonlinear interference between different signals that are transmitted through the fiber, which is manifested as noise. This nonlinear interference noise (NLIN), and its effects on the communication system's performance, is the focus of this seminar.

Nonlinear interference noise possesses properties that are significantly different than those of other noise sources, such as additive white noise. As such, the effect of NLIN on the channel's information capacity needs to be carefully evaluated, and new tools must be developed to characterize it. In this seminar, we will discuss the physical origin and characteristics of NLIN, methods for estimating its statistical properties, and how to mitigate its adverse effects.
