Prediction of Damage Propagation in Aerospace Composite Structures: Advanced Numerical and Experimental Methods

 Dr. Ofir Shor
serves as a composite-materials expertise at Rafael

The use of composite materials in advanced engineering applications is growing rapidly due to their excellent specific strength, fatigue and corrosion resistance, and the ability to tailor their mechanical properties in order to achieve optimal structural performance. Due to their complex architecture, failure of composite materials is often characterized by the onset and progression of distinct damage mechanisms that interact with each other and yield a complex material behavior during loading.
The advances in knowledge and computational power have allowed sophisticated numerical tools and methods to be applied in order to investigate, predict and describe the behavior of composite materials at various stages, from manufacturing to service, and their ultimate failure. These methods are currently applied to small scale structures and test coupons, while predicting failure in large scale composite structures, remains a challenging task.
In this seminar, the governing failure mechanisms of composites will be described, followed by innovative approaches of simulating these failure modes in large scale structures. Practical examples demonstrating how advanced experimental methods are utilized with cutting-edge numerical tools to allow simulation of damage propagation in composites will be presented. This will be followed by a brief overview of the latest research activities performed in Rafael in collaboration with the US Air Force Research Laboratory in the exciting field of composite materials.

Internal waves and wave focusing in stratified and/or rotating fluids

Dr. Jan-Bert Flor, LEGI, CNRS

In this presentation I will discuss experimental results on the generation ofl internal waves, in rotating and/or stratified fluids, that are investigated in the context of internal wave generation in the ocean.  Internal waves were generally investigated in two-dimensional flow geometries. How does the wave field change in a three dimensional flow geometry ? After a general introduction omn former results, the wave field such as generated by a horizontally oscillating torus will be discussed. This wave field has the form of a cone below and above the torus, with a focal point in the apex where the waves reach a maximum amplitude. After considering the basic properties of this wave field and a comparison with an approximate linear theory, we consider its nonlinear aspects  for different amplitudes of oscillations. Above a certain threshold, wave breaking appears, and coincides with resonant wave triads appearing near the focal region (Ermanyuk, Shmakova & Flór, J Fluid Mech 2017; Shmakova & Flór, J. Fluid Mech 2019). Next we discuss the flow induced by the oscillation of a vertically oscillating torus in a rotating fluid, and the formation of an isolated blob of turbulence in the focal point. The turbulent blob in the rotating fluid leads to the formation of an organised columnar vortex (Duran Matute et al 2013, Phys. Rev. E 87;  Flór et al . in prep.), whereas the overturning waves in a stratified fluid hardly organise into a large scale motion. Finally we’ll discuss the differences in dynamics when stratification and rotation are present.

Dynamics of two-component solitons in optics and matter waves
By:
Zhiwei Fan
M.Sc. student under supervision of Prof. Boris A. Malomed
Abstract
Solitons, also known as solitary waves, exist in a large range of fields featuring essential nonlinear effects. They play a significant role in many subjects, such as optics, astronomy, condensed physics, biology, etc. It was first observed in 1834 by John Scott Russell in a canal in Scotland. In the subsequent years, the nonlinear waves were considered in many integrable nonlinear equations, such as nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) and so on.
In this research, we mainly focus on the dynamics and stability of solitons in two-component systems. This talk consists of two parts, in the first one, we consider a dual-core nonlinear waveguide with PT symmetry, realized in the form of equal gain and loss terms carried by the coupled cores. And the second part will mainly focus on the solitons in matter waves which supported by the different nonlinearities, such as dipole-dipole interactions (DDI), microwave interactions.
