Response shaping with a silicon ring resonator via double injection

Abstract:
Many electro-optical (EO) devices for signal processing and telecommunication in silicon photonics architecture have been proposed and demonstrated in recent years by both academy and industry. Silicon-based EO devices are attractive primarily due to the ability of integrating them with silicon-based circuits manufactured in traditional electronic fabrication facilities.
Modern systems often provide complex functionality that can be realized by tailoring together elements of simpler functionality. Multiplicity of simple optical functions (response shapes), when densely fabricated on a chip, can promote the concept of Field-Programmable Optical Array (also known by Optical Field-Programmable Gate Array or O-FPGA).
In my research the shaping of the frequency response, or otherwise an electrical-to-optical response, has been studied and demonstrated by means of a racetrack-shaped ring resonator designed and fabricated in the so-called, Double Injection configuration. This configuration owns a unique property that allows two Free Spectral Range states (regular, 2×regular) to exist for a single ring length. Shaping is realized by properly selecting different coupling coefficients that provide a variety of interesting responses. These responses can be utilized to enhance the efficiency in electro optical transmission in both transmitter and receiver sides. In addition, due to the nature of the shapes and the ability to dynamically reconfigure them, the device can be harnessed in signal processing applications, aiming to replace their electrical counterpart.
Some of the shapes that have been discovered and researched are: sinusoidal, triangular (linear), square (bandpass), notches and peaks (2 states), spikes (tangent), interleaver and a, so-called, 20dB-min Parameters-Insensitive-Response modulator. The transmission responses were experimentally realized, fabricated at TAU MicroFab and Nano-Center facilities in a silicon-on-insulator platform (Silicon Photonics). A measurement station was erected to couple the optical fibers to the on-chip devices. The devices were characterized at wavelengths around 1,550nm. In addition, I will also show the fabrication of an electro-optical version of the linear transmission based on a MOS capacitor.
