פרופסור אברהם (אבי) זייפרט - חוקר ומדען פורץ דרך
פרופ׳ אברהם (אבי) זייפרט (1959-2023) היה מהחוקרים המובילים בעולם בתחום בקרת הזרימה האקטיבית וראש המעבדה לאווירודינמיקה ע״ש מדואו באוניברסיטת תל-אביב. אבי הנחה ונתן השראה לעשרות רבות של סטודנטים לתארים מתקדמים לאורך הקריירה שבה ראה את שליחות חייו. תלמידים אלו מאיישים היום שלל תפקידי מפתח באקדמיה, במחקר ובתעשייה עתירת הידע בארץ ובעולם.
הפקולטה להנדסה באוניברסיטת תל אביב, והמעבדה לאווירודינמיקה בפרט, היו מוסד מרכזי בחייו של אבי. דרכו המקצועית החלה בתואר הראשון בפקולטה, המשיכה בתואר השני והדוקטורט שהשלים במעבדה, ובתקופת הפוסט-דוקטורט בנאס״א-לאנגלי בארה״ב וסגרה מעגל עם המינוי לפרופ׳ מן המניין בפקולטה וראש המעבדה. אבי כיהן גם כסגן דקאן למחקר וכראש בית הספר להנדסה מכנית באוניברסיטת תל אביב. אבי שימש כחבר בוועדות מארגנות, סייע בסקירת הצעות מחקר וקידום חברי סגל.
מעבר למחקר יסוד בתחום אויוירודינמיקה בלתי תמידית, ניסיונית ובקרת זרימה, אבי הוביל שיתופי פעולה עם גופי מחקר ופיתוח בחברות התעשייה הביטחונית בישראל, ביניהן אלביט והתעשייה האווירית. כמו כן הוביל אבי שיתופי פעולה מחקריים רבים, באירופה ובארה"ב עם חוקרי צבא וחיל האוויר האמריקאי כחלק משיתוף פעולה בטחוני בהובלת מפא"ת. אבי גם שיתף פעולה עם חטיבות המחקר בחברות תעופה בינלאומיות דוגמת בואינג ואיירבס, ומעבדות מחקר מובילות בתחום בקרת הזרימה באירופה ובארה״ב.
העשייה של אבי תרמה תרומה משמעותית לתחום בקרת הזרימה האקטיבית. לאורך שנותיו במעבדה אבי עסק במחקר על מגוון רחב של כלים – החל מחלקי כנף של מטוס בגדלים שונים שעברו במעבדה ובמנהרת הרוח שבה, עבור בניסויי שדה ברחבי הארץ שכללו הטסת טיסנים בתנאי שטח. בתקופות מסוימות כמעט כל כלי טיס שפותח בישראל נבחן על ידי אבי וצוות המעבדה. בתחום הרכב, אבי תרם באופן משמעותי למספר מיזמים בינלאומיים להורדת גרר משאיות. הטכנולוגיות שפיתח, שביניהן ניתן למנות התקני בקרת זרימה שניתן להתקין על דופן מכולה הנגררת על-ידי משאית, הגיעו לשיתופי פעולה עם חברות רכב גלובליות. בתקופת הקורונה, אבי פיתח רעיונות לדגמים משופרים של מכונות הנשמה וגלשני hydrofoil.
אבי הנחה בקבוצת המחקר שלו עשרות סטודנטים לתארים מתקדמים, והכשיר אלפי סטודנטים לתואר ראשון בתחום אווירודינמיקה. עם בוגרות ובוגרי המעבדה שלו נמנים יזמים, מרצים וחוקרים, ראשי מדור במפא״ת, מנהלים בכירים בתע״א ומפקדים בחיל האוויר. על פי דירוג של אונ׳ Stanford, בשנת 2020 אבי הוכר בתחום Aerospace & Aeronautics בין 0.5% החוקרים המובילים בתחום. אבי פרסם בירחונים המובילים בעולם בתחומו, רשם תשעה פטנטים, והוזמן לעתים קרובות להרצות בכנסים בינלאומיים חשובים.
בצעירותו זכה כשחקן כדור-יד בתארים לאומיים בקבוצת הפועל רחובות, ייצג את ישראל בנבחרות הלאומיות ותרם רבות לענף כמאמן, ובהמשך כמתנדב במגוון תפקידי ניהול ואימון בקבוצת אס״א תל-אביב.

Professor Avraham (Avi) Seifert – Trail-blazing scientist and researcher
Professor Avraham (Avi) Seifert (1959-2023) was a world-leading researcher in the field of active flow control and Head of the Meadow Aerodynamics Laboratory at Tel Aviv University. Avi instructed and inspired many dozens of graduate students throughout his career, which he saw as his life’s mission. His students now fill various key roles in academia, research, and industry in Israel and abroad.
The Tel Aviv University Engineering Department and especially the Aerodynamics Laboratory were the main institutions of Avi’s life work. His professional path began with a bachelor’s degree in the faculty and continued with a master’s degree and doctorate which he completed in the laboratory. After completing his post-graduate studies at NASA-Langley, USA, Avi turned full circle: he came home to head the Meadow Aerodynamics Lab as full professor in the Tel Aviv Engineering Faculty. Avi also served as the Vice-Dean for Research and Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tel Aviv University.
Beyond fundamental research in the fields of unsteady aerodynamics, experimental aerodynamics and flow control, Avi led collaborations with research and development bodies in the defense industry companies in Israel, including Elbit Industries and the Israel Aerospace Industry. He also guided many other research cooperations in Europe and the USA and with US Army and Air Force researchers as part of the security cooperation led by the Directorate for the Development of Weapons and Infrastructure. Additionally, Avi was involved in academic-industry projects with the research teams of airlines such as Boeing and Airbus, and leading US and European research laboratories in the field of flow control.
Over the years, Avi’s work provided a significant contribution to the field of active flow control. His laboratory employed a wide variety of research tools, from wind tunnels to test aircraft wing parts to test flights in the field. During certain periods in the history of Israel, nearly all aircraft developed in Israel were tested by Avi and the laboratory staff. In the field of automotive vehicles, Avi contributed substantially to several international projects for the unloading of truck trailers. Technologies he developed included flow control devices that can be installed on the side of a truck trailer, were in negotiation for use in coordination with by global automobile companies. During the Covid-19 period, Avi also developed ideas for improved ventilators and hydrofoil glider models.
Avi’s research group mentored dozens of graduate students and trained thousands of bachelor’s degree students in aerodynamics. Among the graduates of his laboratory are entrepreneurs, inventors, and lecturers; a unit head of the Directorate for the Development of Weapons and Infrastructure; senior managers in Israel Aerospace Industry and superintendents in the IDF Airforce. In the Stanford University Scientists Rankings, in 2020 Avi was recognized as being in the top 0.5% of leading researchers in the field of Aeronautics and Aerospace. Avi published his research in prestigious international professional journals, registered nine patents and was frequently invited to teach at important international conferences.
As a young man, Avi won national titles in handball competitions playing for Hapoel Rehovot team and representing Israel on the Israeli National Handball Team. He went on to contribute to the sport as a coach, and later on to volunteer in various management and training positions on the Tel Aviv Academic Sports Association team.
