HumetricNeRF: Leveraging Depth Sensor Fusion for Sparse-View Human Radiance Field Reconstruction
Abstract
We introduce HumetricNeRF, a depth-supervised dynamic Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) for reconstructing humans in motion from sparse-views. Our method leverages physical depth sensors, which provide reliable, albeit noisy, metric measurements and serve as supervisory signals for scene geometry reconstruction. When active sensing is degraded or unavailable, monocular depth estimation is incorporated as a learned sensing modality, providing dense virtual depth priors. By fusing these complementary sensing modalities, our approach overcomes key challenges in full-body radiance field reconstruction under sparse-view conditions, where NeRF methods are known to suffer significant performance degradation. While previous works leveraged depth priors to improve photorealistic rendering and enforce geometric constraints in static scenes, extending depth supervision to constantly changing dynamic scenes presents substantially greater challenges. Our novel framework builds on the representation of humans as a neural field, which enables free-viewpoint rendering given a monocular video. Using our approach, fused depth priors are incorporated during training to improve the volumetric representation of humans in motion, grounding learning with sensor-based metric supervision when NeRF struggles to infer accurate scene geometry. Additional background-aware color and density penalties further suppress undesired artifacts, yielding cleaner reconstructions. We demonstrate improved visual and quantitative results on numerous few-view dynamic human scenes.
