Abstract:
Many issues related to human interaction and communication with AVs are still open. Many others will emerge as we encounter more frequent interactions that will take place outside of the laboratory. In this talk, I explore the interaction of pedestrians and AVs from the perspective of social behavior. Human behavior in social situations is often influenced by social bindings, which helps people make decisions and act, as they often do when a pedestrian and driver meets. In a set of survey and laboratory studies we aimed to explore how would the pedestrian-AV meetings would look like in the absence of a fellow human driver. We set to learn the pedestrians’ attitude, concerns, and expected behavior when interacting with AV; the acceptability of abusive and exploitative behavior to unmanned AVs, means of mitigation, and the actual effects on road crossing decisions. Through that work we seek to improve the design and coordination of pedestrians with AVs in future interactions.
