Abstract

Practical systems for generating mid-IR wavelengths are required for applications such as infrared counter measured and molecular spectroscopy.  One approach is to use low cost and almost ubiquitous near-IR fiber lasers to pump optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) in order to reach the mid-IR.  High efficiency wavelength conversion generally requires the use of narrow band pump sources. Unfortunately, due to the long length of fiber and small core cross-sections, nonlinearities in fiber lasers tend to generate light with large output bandwidths.

Practical and inexpensive fiber lasers tend to have large bandwidths. Narrower bandwidths are possible at the expense of system cost and complexity.  The current state of analytic models for describing the OPO output efficiency as a function of input pump laser bandwidth is mainly non-existent due to the complexity of OPO operation, including nonlinear gain and temporal dynamics.

In this seminar I will talk about the construction of a pump fiber laser with controllable bandwidth, I will present a wide set of measurements preformed in our lab using this laser and OPO setup, and present an analysis of those results. Finally I will talk about an analytical explanation for the reduction of OPO efficiency using phase matching considerations that reproduce the main features of the experimental measurements.
