Radiation Risks – Myths vs. Reality

Jean Koch, Ph.D

~~Radiation Safety Division, Soreq Nuclear Research Center

Health effects due to exposure to ionizing radiation will be reviewed, while making a distinction between low radiation doses associated with occupational/medical/public exposure to radiation and high radiation doses that may be caused in nuclear/radiological  emergency situations. Several common myths will be presented, related to a biased perception of radiation risks by the public. The presentation will emphasize the following issues: exposure to natural background radiation vs. exposure to anthropogenic radiation sources, the controversy surrounding health effects of exposure to low radiation doses, major nuclear accidents vs. major industrial accidents with regard to their health consequences.

Dr. Koch is involved for more than 3 decades in radiation protection and risk assessment of activities that may expose workers/members of the public to ionizing radiation. He served until recently as Head of the Radiation Safety Division at the Soreq Nuclear Research Center. He is currently on a part-time sabbatical at the School of Mechanical Engineering. He also teaches a course on "Radiation risk assessment" in the Environmental Engineering Program.
