Modern smartphone photography

 The first smartphone camera phone was sold only 20 years ago, when taking pictures with one's phone was an oddity, and sharing pictures online was unheard of. Today, the smartphone is more a camera than a phone and,  therefore, puts astonishing photography capabilities in everyone’s hand [1].

This transformation was enabled by huge advances in both camera hardware and computational photography - the science and engineering of creating great images with compact smartphone cameras.

In terms of miniature optics innovation, autofocusing and optical image stabilization technologies allow for capturing crisp images without any user intervention. Folded optics allows for super-slim zoom cameras, which are able to autonomously scan a scene.

In terms of image sensor innovation, we discuss modern CMOS image sensors, which represent a camera-on-chip with fantastic capabilities, from adaptive pixel resolutions of up to 200megaixel and to embedded on-sensor machine learning for advanced scene understanding.

Computational photography leverages these hardware innovations and revolutionizes the rules of photography, while bringing new modes of capturing, post-processing, storaging, and sharing.

After discussing the state-of-the-art, we will outline near-future innovations such as autonomous mobile cameras and beyond-vision imaging.

Dr. Michael Scherer is enthusiastic about history, languages, and bringing new technologies to market. As a versatile physicist/engineer, he developed and marketed technologies for mobile photography, computer vision, organic electronics and printed sensors in Israel and Germany. He is Lead Physicist at Samsung Corephotonics, founded by Prof. David Mendlovic/TAU in 2012.
